How to Choose Your First Coloured Contact Lenses

Your first lens doesn't have to be the perfect one. It just has to help you discover what you like.

So, you've been thinking about trying coloured contact lenses. You've probably looked at a few shades online, saved a couple of pictures, and then found yourself wondering:

“Which one will actually look good on me?”

The shade question

Choosing your shade shouldn't feel like a guessing game

And honestly, that's a fair question. A lens can look beautiful on someone else and still look completely different on you. Your natural eye colour, skin tone, undertone and even the lighting around you can change the way a shade appears.

This is something we realised quite early at Monvue.

When we were creating Monvue, we kept coming back to one problem: how do you know which shade is actually meant for you if you've never worn coloured lenses before?

You can look at pictures. You can compare swatches. You can ask a friend. But until you actually see a colour on your own eyes, it's difficult to know how you'll feel about it.

That's what led us to create the Monvue Trial Pack.

Why we created the Monvue Trial Pack

The Trial Pack wasn't created just to give you smaller quantities of different colours. It was created because we wanted trying coloured contact lenses for the first time to feel easier.

Instead of having to choose one shade immediately, you get the chance to explore a few.

  • 01
    Try them
  • 02
Look at yourself in natural light
  • 03
See how they work with your skin tone
  • 04
Wear them with or without makeup

And most importantly, see which one feels the most like you.

Because sometimes the shade you think you'll love isn't the one you end up choosing. And that's completely okay.

Step one

Start with your natural eye colour

Before choosing a shade, take a good look at your natural eyes.

If you have deep brown eyes, for example, a brown lens may give you a soft, dimensional change, while a grey or green shade may create more contrast.

But don't assume that a particular colour will look exactly like it does on the model wearing it. Your natural eye colour becomes part of the final result.

Good to know

That's why the same pair of coloured contact lenses can look slightly different from person to person. And honestly, that's part of what makes choosing your shade fun.

Step two

How much change do you actually want?

This is probably the easiest question to ask yourself. Do you want someone to look at you and think:

“Her eyes look really pretty today.”

Or:

“Wait… did you change your eye colour?”

Maybe you want the first one. Maybe you want the second. Or maybe you're somewhere in between.

If you're completely new to coloured contact lenses, starting with a shade close to your natural eye colour can feel more familiar.

  • Warmth
    Soft browns

    Can add warmth.

  • Definition
    Muted greys

    Can add definition.

  • A fresh change
    Subtle greens

Give your eyes a fresh change without making the colour feel too overpowering.

And if you want something more noticeable, you can always go bolder. There really isn't a right or wrong answer here.

Step three

Your skin tone can help you narrow it down

Your skin tone is another thing you can look at, but don't let it dictate your choice. Think of it as a starting point, not a set of rules.

  • Warm
    Warm undertones

Often work beautifully with earthy and warmer shades.

  • Cool
    Cool undertones

Can complement muted greys and cooler greens.

  • Neutral
    Neutral undertones

You have plenty of room to experiment.

But here's the thing: you don't have to wear a particular colour just because someone says it suits your undertone. If you love a shade, try it.

That's exactly why we believe trying different coloured contact lenses can tell you much more than a colour chart ever could.

Step four

Think about your everyday look

Imagine yourself wearing the lens on a normal day. Not just in a perfectly lit photograph.

Would you wear it to college? To work? For brunch? For dinner? With your everyday makeup? Or even with no makeup at all?

  • Soft and minimal
    Softer browns, greys or greens

If your style is usually soft and minimal, you might naturally gravitate here.

  • Makeup and fashion
    A little more contrast

If you love playing around with makeup and fashion, you might enjoy this.

Your lens doesn't have to become the entire look. Sometimes it's just that small detail that makes everything feel a little different.

A note for first-timers

Don't trust the picture alone

This is something we really want first-time lens wearers to know. A lens can look different in real life than it does on your screen. And that's not necessarily a problem.

The shade you see online is being shown on someone else's eyes, under specific lighting, with specific makeup and a specific skin tone. Your result will be yours.

Explore, don't overthink

When choosing coloured contact lenses, we think it's better to explore than to overthink. Try a few shades. Compare them. Give yourself the chance to be surprised.

The whole idea

And that's the whole idea behind the Trial Pack

When we created the Monvue Trial Pack, we didn't want to tell you: “This is the colour you should wear.” We wanted to give you the freedom to figure it out yourself.

  • Maybe
    You'll try brown

You'll put on a brown shade and immediately think, “This is me.”

  • Maybe
    You'll try grey

You'll realise you like a little more contrast.

  • Or maybe
    You'll try green

The colour you were unsure about, and end up loving it the most.

That's the point.

The Trial Pack lets you experience different coloured contact lenses before deciding which shade belongs in your everyday rotation.

Because at Monvue, we don't think there is one perfect shade for everyone. There are colours that complement different people, different moods and different styles.

Coloured contact lenses are prescription-only medical devices. Consult your eyecare professional before wearing contact lenses, especially if this is your first time.

The Monvue Trial Pack

Your first lens doesn't have to be the perfect one.

It just has to help you discover what you like.

Try a few. Find the one that feels like you.

That's where your Monvue shade story begins.
